Hypoxic Training

HYPOXIC TRAINING CAMP AT PAJULAHTI

Pajulahti is one of the few places in Finland where athletes can enjoy the benefit of living and training at high altitude. Extended exposure to hypoxia can improve aerobic fitness by increasing hemoglobin mass.

If you want to get more information about our hypoxic facilities or need advice about appropriate hypoxic dosing, call our hypoxia experts (+358 447755225) or send a message to [email protected]. For reservations, please contact our sales representative Jaakko Erkinheimo (+358 447755215, [email protected]).

Our facilities offer 15 hypoxic hotel rooms and an additional alpine training room. This training room offers a variety of cardio equipment (Woodway treadmill mat, Gymstick Pro ski ergometer, Wattbike bicycle ergometer and spinning bike), as well as equipment to support training (massage table, scale, and oxygen saturation meter), a washing machine and a dryer.

Extended exposure to hypoxia can improve aerobic fitness by increasing hemoglobin mass. On the other hand, altitude training also causes more stress on the body, which can be accompanied by risks and adverse effects. Thus, it is not advisable to use hypoxic exposure to get into shape, the fitness status should already be solid before the hypoxia exposure. During hypoxia it is not advisable to aim for weight loss either. Moreover, training must be modified and possibly lightened.

Before coming to altitude, we recommend athletes to plan the altitude training camp together with experts. We also recommend running a blood test to determine ferritin level and the need for iron supplementation.

During the high-altitude camp, we recommend balancing the increased load by sleeping more, increasing carbohydrate intake, and drinking more fluids. During the first days of the camp, you should also train lighter than normal. In addition, we also recommend to closely follow training load, life stress and rest, as well as blood oxygen saturation to know how well the body is adapting to hypoxic conditions. We also recommend daily weighing and monitoring the color of urine to try avoiding the risk of energy deficit and dehydration. As a supplement, in addition to iron, consider antioxidants and immune system supplements due to the higher oxidative stress caused by hypoxic conditions.

Reading this quick guide will help you get the most out of your hypoxic camp in Pajulahti.

The one bit of information you must understand, is that only the bedroom space is set to hypoxic conditions, which means that the bathroom and entrance area remain at sea level conditions. Therefore, both terrace door and door to entrance area must be kept closed always when possible.

The altitude reading you see on the display of ambient sensor in your room might be up to 200 m off target, without it being a matter of concern. This happens because this sensor only shows its own reading, but the ambient conditions are adjusted based on four independent sensors. Please, reach alppistaff (+358 447755225, calls only) if this reading is off target by more than 200 m and this cannot be explained by an altitude drop caused by recent window/door openings. Continuous ambient conditions adjustment reacts to two wall-mounted sensors, and it is recalibrated, if needed, based on regular morning data we get from two portable oxygen monitors. This means that our staff will quickly visit your room most mornings, between 8:00 – 11:30 am, whether you are present or not.

The training room (Puistopaju C, room 9C105) is permanently set to 1800 m of altitude unless requested otherwise. Here you will find the following equipment at your disposal, completely free of charge:

  • Cardio devices: Woodway treadmill mat, Gymstick Pro ski ergometer, Wattbike bicycle ergometer and a spinning bike.
  • Scale to follow bodyweight changes, which serves as an indirect way to follow energy balance and fluid loss. Special attention should be put to prevent caloric deficit and fluid loss during hypoxic exposure.
  • Pulse oximeter to follow blood oxygen saturation from the fingertip to keep track on acclimation status.
  • Massage table and Yoga mat.
  • Washing machine, drier and powder detergent.

You will be able to access the training room with your room key. The room can only be used by one customer at a time, you will be able to reserve it using the list on the bedroom door of the training room. Please, clean your hands before entering the room and clean the sweat off with your own towel after your workout. Please, open the back door for 1-2 minutes for ventilation after your workout.

For issues related to hypoxic room conditions, please contact our hypoxic experts (+358 447755225, calls only). For any other issue, please contact reception (+358 447755313).
